Design Philosophy
We believe that architecture – be it in cities or rural places – is part of the natural environment. Buildings are a physical and emotional expression of our surroundings. Just as nature is ever mutable, we believe that architecture should not be static. It must always dialogue with the natural setting and provide suitable feelings and experiences.
More and more, this has become our ethos. We seek to get closer to nature in our work; to integrate the natural environment into our manmade universes and reduce our architecture’s impact on nature. This comes from not merely imitating natural materials and landforms, but also connecting to past memories gleaned through personal encounters with nature. We hope it will ignite the senses that lead to a curiosity and discovery – akin to a traveller pushed deeper along paths of exploration. It is a paramount way of thinking that we believe is necessary to make efficacious, innovative and inspiring architecture.
自然や都市そのものは我々にとって環境であり、建築もまた都市環境を形成する環境の一部である。
我々が追求するのは自然への帰還である。
それは単に素材、調和、環境負荷だけの話ではなく、体験として得た過去の記憶との所縁を意味する。
誰もが好奇心のままに行動を掻き立てられ、好奇心の赴くままに奥へ奥へと進んでいったように、
建築は個々の記憶と感動を映し出す環境となる。
変化と流動が躍動する中で、建築は常に開かれたダイナミズムを纏い、
世界との交わりを紡ぎ
外部に接続された広大な環境の一部となる。
過去に体験した記憶を現代に繋ぎ、ノスタルジアと現代の融合から新たな建築体験を創り出す。
About
SAAD - sudo associates, architecture and design is an architectural and design practice founded in 2014 by Tomoyuki Sudo. We design across scales – from products, dwellings and hospitality works to master plans and exhibition spaces, among other typologies. While based in Tokyo, we work globally, creating spaces that respond to specific contexts, cultures and environments. SAAD currently has clients spanning Asia to Oceania.
We are always curious and engaged in common humanistic and social issues – such as the declining birth rate, aging population, rising material costs and labour shortages plaguing Japan, as well as concerns of climate change, economic disparity and environmental decline that is affecting the world.
As such, our approach is a holistic one. We eschew the architect’s ego to address these fundamental problems in the conception of our designs so that they create positive, lasting and valuable impact for the users, nature and the community.

Tomoyuki Sudo
Guiding our close-knit team is our principal Tomoyuki Sudo. Born in Hokkaido in 1978, Tomoyuki graduated from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles, USA between with an undergraduate degree. A master’s degree in London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture (AADRL) followed. His work experience includes amphibianArc in Los Angeles and Florian Busch Architects in Tokyo.
Tomoyuki’s foray into architecture stemmed from a childhood steeped in its influence. His home was surrounded by a construction site’s material yard. Hence, as a child, he watched the coming and going of trucks hauling materials, which he made forts with. He is also the fourth generation of a family involved in the construction industry; his great grandfather was a shrine carpenter, his grandfather originated a construction business, which his father grew. His foray into the architecture world was inevitable as he studied, played and shopped in buildings constructed by his father’s company. Altogether, these influences seeded in him the excitement of creating and shaping buildings and environments.
2014年に事務所設立。北海道·新潟·長野·東京·沖縄などで、主にホテル、別荘、住宅を手掛け、都市計画や、展示空間、デザインコンサルタントなど多岐にプロジェクトを手がける。数多くの賞を受賞。今後も範囲を拡大していく。
1978年 北海道生まれ、沖縄宮古島を第二の故郷とする。
家具、エキシビジョンスペース、リノベーション、インテリア、住宅、別荘、レストラン、小規模ホテル、商業施設、マスタープラン等のデザイン業務を経験。現在、様々なスケールのプロジェクトを進行中。SAAD / 建築設計事務所を主宰。
